DISCHARGE SUMMARIES: PAIN MEDS

INSTRUCTIONS FOR TAKING YOUR PAIN MEDICATIONS:

Take your pain medications as instructed.  It is best to take pain medications before your pain becomes severe. This will allow you to take less medication yet have better pain relief.  For the first 2 or 3 days it may be helpful to take your pain medications on a regular schedule (e.g. every 4 to 6 hours). This will help you to keep your pain under better control. You should then begin to take fewer medications each day until you no longer need them.  Additionally, you have been prescribed a stool softener to decrease your risk for constipation while taking oral narcotic medications.  Continue this medication for a minimum of 2 days after stopping your oral pain medication.  You should discontinue the stool softener for 1-2 days if you develop diarrhea.

Do not consume more than 4000 mg or 4 gm (for an adult) of Tylenol or acetaminophen-containing products within a 24 hour time period to avoid damage to your liver.  The maximum allowable dosage for children is dependent upon weight.

Do not take pain medication on an empty stomach. This may lead to nausea and vomiting.

Do not drive, operate heavy machinery, ride motorcycles or ATVs, drink alcohol, or take other drugs that make you tired or sleepy while taking narcotic pain medications.  Do not participate in any dangerous activity while taking pain medications. Pain medications may decrease your ability to make safe decisions.

Non-Drug Pain Control Methods Include:  Cold and Heat, Distraction, Massage, Guided Imagery, Music, Physical Therapy, Relaxation, Exercises, Rest.
