DISCHARGE SUMMARIES: NASAL SALINE IRRIGATIONS

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING AND USING NASAL IRRIGATIONS:


1. Purchase an "ear syringe".

2. Mix Solution:

      - Normal Saline

      - 1 Teaspoon salt

      - 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

      - 1 quart water (sterile or previously boiled), store in a clean bottle

3. Squeeze bulb of syringe to withdraw solution.

4. Leaning over sink, insert tip of syringe about 1 1/2 to 2 inches into nostril.

5. Gently squeeze bulb to irrigate nose.

6. Blow nose gently after first irrigation.

7. Repeat the irrigation process.


Note: The normal saline solution can be placed in a nasal spray bottle for moisturizing the nasal mucosa.
