DISCHARGE SUMMARIES: SMOKING POSTOP

SMOKING AFTER SURGERY:

If you use tobacco products it is critical that you stop for at least four weeks after surgery. Tobacco use can contribute to scarring, poor healing, and failure of the operation.

Smoking increases the risk for developing blood clots and heart disease that can result in a heart attack, heart failure or stroke. Smoking is also linked to lung disease and cancer, and can cause premature death.  Tobacco use is directly linked to head and neck cancer.  We strongly advice smoking cessation.  If you are interested in quitting, you can receive information through XXXXX.
