Scratchy Throat

Question: A 10 year old female is seen for right sided throat discomfort and hot potato voice.  She is afebrile and tolerating PO intake.  She has had 3 throat infections per year, and the last two have been positive for group A streptococcus.  The emergency department obtains a CT scan that shows a 3 x 2 cm peritonsillar abscess.  The on-call resident recommends needle aspiration.  What is the likelihood of requiring a formal I&D if the needle aspiration is successful?    [Answer will be posted with next week's new question]

Answer to last week's question, "Orbiting the Problem" (October 2, 2017)

Soft tissue entrapment potentially tethering the inferior rectus muscle.
