Welcome to the 3D Atlas of Temporal Bone Surgery!

About: In this compilation, you will find photographs of dissections performed by Neil Patel, MD in collaboration with Matthew Carlson, MD. Each chapter is intended to walk you through common otologic or neurotologic procedures and can be used as a guide for temporal bone lab dissection or as a concise visual study aid.

Each step of the dissection exhibits a triad of images: 1) a 2D image with annotations and anatomic orientation; 2) a 2D image without annotations; and 3) a 3D image without annotations. The 2D annotated image includes accompanying “key points” that reveal themselves with a mouse hover, or a tap on the dot in the lower right corner if using a mobile device. The 3D image is displayed in stereoscopic format and should be viewed with conventional red-cyan 3D glasses (e.g. here). This atlas uniquely provides the most comprehensive 3D temporal bone dissection series currently available.

In addition to using these images for your own education or reference, we encourage you to use them in your own presentations or share them on social media. If you do, we kindly ask that you retain the attribution statement currently embedded in each image to inform your audience of the original source and to lead others to this free resource.
