Welcome to the Business of Medicine Course! (19 Credits of Free CME available)

About: The Business of Medicine Course was developed by Ashley Nassiri MD MBA, in collaboration with Matthew Carlson MD and David S Haynes MD MMHC, to empower the physician in patient, self, and systemic advocacy and leadership. Medical education has traditionally overlooked business of medicine training, costing physicians opportunities in administrative decision-making and autonomy. In addition to mastering clinical expertise, the modern physician is required to innovate and lead teams to develop high-value health care delivery models that enhance the patient experience. While the application of business principles are key in optimizing health care, obtaining a formal business degree, or MBA, is not practical nor necessary for most physicians.

The Business of Medicine Course has organized resources for the physician (in any specialty) interested in augmenting their medical training with health care-specific business principles. The course is organized into three domains: leadership, health care delivery, and practice management. Foundational knowledge is provided through podcasts and additional readings, and lessons in practical applications are found in the reflective worksheets, all of which can be completed on your own schedule. This curriculum serves as a starting point to build foundational knowledge prior to application in the real world.

We hope that by training current and future generations of physicians in the principles of the Business of Medicine, we can shape the future of health care in a way that benefits patients, physician leaders, and society as a whole. In addition to using this course curriculum for your own education or reference, we encourage you to incorporate this into any training curriculum (e.g., medical school or residency). If you do, we kindly ask that you include the attribution statement below to inform your audience of the original source and to lead others to this free resource.
