Welcome to the Global Surgery podcast series, a special topic series within ENT in a Nutshell

In 2014 we learned some staggering facts about global access to safe and affordable surgery:

  • 5 billion people lack access to adequate surgical and anesthetic care worldwide

  • 140 million additional procedures a year are needed to fill that gap

  • 6% of the world’s surgeries are occurring within Low/Middle Income Countries (LMICs)

  • 1/3rd of the world receives 6% of all surgery performed worldwide

  • 81 million people a year are pushed into poverty from seeking surgical care

  • 30% of the global burden of disease is surgical in nature

This podcast series was developed by Dr. Josh Wiedermann and Dr. Cynthia Chweya to provide listeners the opportunity to dive headfirst into what it means to understand, experience, study, and push forward the field of Global Surgery. In other words, what do the findings from the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery mean to you? Lets find out!

If you have never heard of global surgery, our podcast episodes aim to empower your future efforts within the field. If you are a practicing physician who has done some global surgery work, we aim to help advance your practice abroad, avoid pitfalls and build relationships. Even if you are a seasoned global surgeon, these conversations may expand your existing world-wide network.

Global Surgery is an intimately connected international community that is focused on why most of us became physicians: to serve the underserved. We invite you to enjoy our podcast series and share in our thoughts and discussions, but we also hope you will join us, suggest episode ideas, volunteer to be a guest or host, and become a part of our global community.

If you do have thoughts or suggestions as your experience this series, we would really love to hear from you. Please feel free to reach out.

Welcome!
